PSY513 - Forensic Psychology

👤😈💥 CRIMINOGENIC PERSONALITY AND VIOLENCE 🧠🚔

🎯 Objectives:

  • To know about the borderline personality disorder 😢💔
  • To understand the narcissistic personality 👑🪞
  • To discuss the paranoid personality disorder 🔍😨
  • To understand the importance of changeability 🔄 vs. predictability ⏹️ debate

😢💔 Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

Borderline Personality Disorder 😢 is also known 📖 as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder 🎢. It is characterized by emotional dysregulation 😭😡, extreme 💯 "black-and-white" ⬛⬜ thinking, or "splitting 🔀", instability in relationships 💔👥, self-image 🪞, identity 🆔, and behavior 🎭, as well as a disturbance 😵 in the individual's sense 🧠 of self 👤.

In extreme cases ⚠️, this disturbance 😵 in the sense of self 👤 can lead to periods 📅 of dissociation 🔗🚫. These disturbances 😵 can have a pervasive negative impact ⬇️👎 on many or all of the psychosocial 🧠👥 facets of life 🌍. This includes the inability 🚫 to maintain relationships 💔 in work 💼, home 🏠, and social settings 👥.

😢💔 Characteristics of Borderline Personality Disorder

  • 😨🚫 Intense fear of abandonment - Terrified of being left alone 👤💔
  • 💥💔 Very impulsive and destructive (only or mainly towards self 👤😢 not others 👥)
  • 🎢😭 Quickly shifting moods - Emotional roller coaster 🎡
  • 😶🚫 Chronic feelings of emptiness - Inner void 🕳️
  • 😡⚡ Explosive anger - Quick temper 💢
  • 😵🔗 Dissociative feelings - Feeling disconnected 🚫
  • 🗡️😢 Self-mutilation, e.g. cutting 🔪, biting 🦷, burning 🔥 themselves
  • 💀😢 Chronic suicidal ideation - Persistent thoughts of ending life 🚫🌍
  • 🎢💔 Unstable relationships - Intense but short-lived 👥⏰

They are actually victims 😢👤 of their own distorted thoughts 🧠💭. They are not aggressive 💪👊 toward others 👥 mostly 📊.

🚔😢 Common Crimes by Borderline Personality

  • 🛒🚫 Shoplifting - Stealing from stores 🏪
  • 💰🛍️ Overspending - Compulsive buying 💳
  • 💊💉 Drug abuse - Substance misuse 🚫
  • 🚗⚡ Reckless driving - Dangerous behavior 🚨
  • 🍔🍕 Binge eating - Eating disorders 🍴
  • 🎰💸 Gambling - Compulsive betting 🃏
  • ❤️‍🔥⚡ Sexually impulsive behavior - Risky encounters 👥

Notice ⚠️ that most of the illegal activities 🚔 they are involved in are somewhat related with their personality 👤🧠 e.g., sense of emptiness 😶🕳️ is related to almost all of these behaviors 🎭.

👑🪞 Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Narcissistic personality disorder 👑 is characterized by a pervasive pattern 📊 of grandiosity 🌟💫, need for admiration 👏🎉, and a lack 🚫 of empathy ❤️. Those who are diagnosed 🩺 with this disorder are easily characterized by their overwhelming 💯 desire for fame 🌟.

The word 📖 comes from the Greek myth 🇬🇷 of Narcissus 👑, who fell in love 😍❤️ with his own reflection 🪞 and eventually died ☠️ because of it. Also, they tend to lack 🚫 empathy ❤️ (love 💕 of another person 👤).

👑🪞 Characteristics of Narcissistic Personality Disorder

  • 🌟👆 Grandiose sense of self-importance - "I am the best 🏆"
  • 💭🏆 Preoccupation with fantasies of success 📈, power 💪, brilliance 💡, beauty 🌹, or ideal love 💕
  • 👑🌟 Believes being special - "I am unique 💎"
  • 🙇👏 Requires excessive admiration - Needs constant praise 🎉
  • 📋🛎️ Has a sense of entitlement - Expects special treatment 👑
  • 🎭🐍 Manipulative and exploitative - Uses others 👥
  • 🚫❤️ Lacks empathy - Cannot feel for others 😶
  • 😒💚 Is often envious of others or believes others are envious 👁️ of them
  • 😤👆 Shows arrogant behaviors - Haughty attitude 💢

Very dangerous 💀 because they would go to extreme levels ⬆️💯 to get what they want 🎯:

  • 😈🗣️ "Marry me 💍 or I'll kill 💀 your mother 👩", "I'll throw acid 🧪 on your face 👩"
  • 😡💢 Take criticism 🗣️ very personally and sometimes react 💥 with rage 😤🔥
  • 🤝💔 In relationships 💑, they take advantage 🐍 of others
  • 🎭😈 Manipulative and deceptive 🤥
  • 🐕👤 View partners 💑 as trophies 🏆 or status symbols 🌟
  • 👆🙅 Grandiose and bossy 😤

🚔👑 Common Crimes by Narcissistic Personality

  • 💔🎭 Emotional crimes - Psychological abuse 😢
  • 💰🐍 White collar crimes - Fraud 📄, embezzlement 💵
  • 💥😤 Violent crimes when enraged (sometimes 💀 murder)
  • 🧪😈 Acid throwing on rejection - Extreme revenge 💢

🔍😨 Paranoid Personality Disorder (PPD)

Paranoid personality disorder 😨 is characterized by paranoia 👀🔍 and a pervasive, long-standing 📅 suspiciousness 🤨 and generalized mistrust 🚫🤝 of others 👥. Those with this personality disorder 😨 are hypersensitive 😣 and are constantly looking 👀🔍 for clues 🕵️ that validate their fears 😱.

Those with PPD 😨 are often at higher risk ⚠️ for depression 😢💔 and social isolation 👤🚫👥. Symptoms 📋 of PPD 😨 include being suspicious 🤨 of people 👥 and their actions 🎭, being ultra-sensitive 😣 to criticism 🗣️, having limited social circles 👥🔒, and having a difficult time 😵 interacting with people 👥.

😨🔍 Characteristics of PPD

  • 🔍🤔 Questioning hidden motives - "What do they really want? 🎯"
  • 😤🗣️ Argumentative - Always ready to debate 💬
  • 🎭🐍 Scheming - Believes others 👥 are plotting 📋
  • 🚫😊 Unfriendly - Keeps distance 📏
  • 🚫🤝 Unforgiving - Holds grudges 💢
  • 😤💥 Hostile - Defensive stance 🛡️
  • 🎭🕵️ Perception of attacks from others 👥 that are not apparent to others and the readiness 💪 to react with anger 😡 or to counterattack ⚔️
  • ❤️‍🔥🤨 Recurrent suspicions, without any reason ❓, of their spouse 👫 or sexual partners' loyalty 💔

😨🚔 Criminality Related to PPD

  • 💥😡 Violence related to unjust suspiciousness - Acting on false beliefs 🧠❌
  • 💀💔 Murder of spouse or girlfriend based on false allegations 🤨🚫
  • 💥👫 Attack on expected or perceived enemies - Preemptive strikes ⚔️
  • 😱🔒 Stalking behavior - Following perceived threats 👀

🔄⏹️ Changeability vs. Predictability Debate

The debate 🗣️⚖️ is about whether criminogenic personalities 👤😈 can change 🔄 or remain predictable ⏹️ throughout life 🌍📅. Key points ⚠️:

  • 🧠🔬 Neuroplasticity - Brain 🧠 can change throughout life 📅
  • 💊🗣️ Treatment effects - Therapy can modify behavior 🎭
  • 👴📉 Age-related changes - Antisocial behavior 😈 often decreases with age 👴
  • 🌍🔄 Environmental factors - Circumstances can influence change 🔀
  • 🧬🚫 Biological constraints - Some traits 📋 may be resistant to change ❌

📝 Summary

This lesson 📖 covered three major personality disorders 🧠😷 associated with criminal behavior 🚔: Borderline 😢💔 (self-destructive 🗡️, victim of their own emotions 😭), Narcissistic 👑🪞 (grandiose 🌟, manipulative 🎭, can be violent 💥 when rejected 🚫), and Paranoid 🔍😨 (suspicious 🤨, hostile 😤, violence based on false beliefs 🧠❌). Understanding 💡 these disorders helps in assessment 📋 and treatment planning 💊📅.
